उनके पति ने ज़ोर-ज़ोर से मदद के लिए पुकारा। यह सुनकर करवा तुरंत नदी किनारे पहुँची और बिना एक पल गँवाए अपने पति को बचाने का प्रयास किया। करवा ने सूती धागे से मगरमच्छ को बाँध लिया और यमराज के सामने जाकर कहा:

“यदि मेरे पति को कुछ हुआ, तो मैं आपको श्राप दे दूँगी!”

करवा की निष्ठा और साहस से प्रभावित होकर यमराज ने कहा:

“हे सती स्त्री, मैं तुम्हारे पति को लंबी आयु प्रदान करता हूँ।”

एक समय की बात है, राजा अश्वपति की पुत्री सावित्री अत्यंत सुंदर, बुद्धिमान और धर्मपरायण थी। उसने अपने स्वयंवर में सत्यवान नामक वनवासी राजकुमार को पति चुना। लेकिन नारद मुनि ने सावित्री को चेतावनी दी कि सत्यवान एक वर्ष बाद मर जाएगा। इसके बावजूद सावित्री ने दृढ़ता से कहा:

“मृत्यु भी मुझे मेरे पति से अलग नहीं कर सकती। मैं उनका साथ हर हाल में निभाऊँगी।”

सावित्री विवाह के बाद अपने पति के साथ वन में रहने लगी। एक वर्ष बाद वह समय आ गया जिसे नारद मुनि ने बताया था। उस दिन सावित्री ने कठोर व्रत रखा और ईश्वर से पति की लंबी आयु के लिए प्रार्थना की। जब सत्यवान लकड़ी काटते समय थककर पेड़ के नीचे सोए, तभी यमराज आए और सत्यवान की आत्मा लेकर चल दिए।

सावित्री उनके पीछे-पीछे चलने लगी। यमराज ने उसे रोका और कहा:

“देवी, मृत देह के पीछे चलना उचित नहीं।”

सावित्री ने विनम्रता से उत्तर दिया:

“धर्म यह नहीं कहता कि मुसीबत में पत्नी पति का साथ छोड़ दे।”

यमराज उसकी बुद्धि और निष्ठा से प्रभावित हुए और बोले:

“माँगो, क्या वर चाहती हो—पर सत्यवान का जीवन नहीं।”

सावित्री ने चतुराई से कहा:

“तो मुझे पुत्रवती होने का आशीर्वाद दीजिए।”

यमराज ने वरदान दे दिया, लेकिन फिर सावित्री बोली:

“पुत्रवती वही हो सकती है जिसका पति जीवित हो। इसलिए आपको मेरे पति को जीवित करना ही होगा।”

यमराज निरुत्तर हो गए और सत्यवान को पुनः जीवन दे दिया। तभी से पतिव्रता स्त्रियों की निष्ठा और व्रत का महत्व करवा चौथ में माना जाने लगा।

बहुत समय पहले एक छोटे से गाँव में एक गरीब भीलनी स्त्री अपने पति के साथ रहती थी। दोनों जंगल से लकड़ियाँ काटकर जीवन चलाते थे। भीलनी अपने पति से बहुत प्रेम करती थी और हमेशा उसकी लंबी उम्र की दुआ करती थी।

एक बार करवाचौथ का व्रत आया। उसने यह व्रत रखने का संकल्प लिया, लेकिन उसके पास पूजा के लिए सामग्री खरीदने के पैसे तक नहीं थे। उसने अपनी पुरानी मिट्टी की हांडी को ही करवा बना लिया और जंगल से ही फूल तोड़कर पूजा की। शाम को उसने व्रत रखा और चंद्रमा का इंतजार करने लगी।

उधर, एक दुष्ट महिला थी जिसे उसकी श्रद्धा और सच्चाई से जलन थी। उसने सोचा कि मैं इसका व्रत बिगाड़ दूँगी। वह पास की पहाड़ी पर लालटेन जलाकर बैठ गई और झूठा चाँद दिखाते हुए बोली:

“अरी भाभी! चाँद निकल आया, जल्दी व्रत खोल लो!”

भोली भीलनी ने उसकी बात मान ली और व्रत तोड़ दिया। उसी रात उसके पति पर भारी विपत्ति आ गई और वह गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़ गया। कुछ समय बाद तो उसकी साँसें भी धीमी हो गईं।

भीलनी रोती हुई जंगल में जा बैठी और ईमानदारी से भगवान से प्रार्थना करने लगी—

“हे भगवान! यदि मेरा व्रत अधूरा था तो मुझे क्षमा करें। मैं फिर से करवाचौथ का व्रत करूँगी। मुझे अपने पति से अलग मत करें।”

उसकी सच्ची प्रार्थना और आस्था से देवता प्रसन्न हुए। अचानक एक दिव्य प्रकाश प्रकट हुआ। आकाश से देवी की आवाज़ आई:

"हे सती नारी! तुम्हारा व्रत तुमने भले ही गलती से तोड़ा, पर मन से तुम सच्ची हो। तुम्हारे पति को लंबी आयु प्राप्त होगी।"

ऐसा कहते ही उसका पति फिर से जीवित हो उठा। उसी दिन से यह माना जाने लगा कि करवा चौथ का व्रत मन से किया जाए तो वह अवश्य फल देता है, चाहे साधन कम ही क्यों न हों।

“पांचाली! चिंता मत करो। तुम्हारे संकट दूर हो सकते हैं, यदि तुम श्रद्धा से करवा चौथ का व्रत करो। यह व्रत पति की रक्षा और लंबी उम्र के लिए अत्यंत प्रभावशाली है।”

कृष्ण ने द्रौपदी को करवाचौथ का विधान और शक्ति बताई। द्रौपदी ने विधि-विधान से व्रत रखा—चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य दिया, पूजा की और पति की लंबी आयु का संकल्प किया। परिणामस्वरूप पांडवों के सामने आए संकट तुरंत टल गए और वे विजय की ओर बढ़े।

Savitri began to follow him. Yamaraj stopped her and said:

"Lady, it is not right to follow a dead body."

"Dharma does not say that a wife should abandon her husband in times of trouble."

Yamaraj was impressed by her intelligence and devotion and said:

"Ask for any boon you desire—but not Satyavan's life."

Savitri cleverly replied:

"Then bless me with a son."

Yamaraj granted the boon, but Savitri then said:

"Only a woman whose husband is alive can have a son. Therefore, you must bring my husband back to life."

Once the Karva Chauth fast came. She resolved to observe the fast, but she didn't even have the money to buy the materials for the puja. She transformed her old clay pot into a karva and worshipped with flowers picked from the forest. In the evening, she observed the fast and waited for the moon.

On the other side, there was an evil woman who was jealous of her faith and truthfulness. She thought, "I will spoil her fast." She sat on a nearby hill, lit a lantern, and, pointing to the false moon, said:

"Hey, sister-in-law! The moon has risen, break your fast quickly!"

The innocent Bhil woman obeyed and broke her fast. That very night, her husband suffered a terrible tragedy and fell seriously ill. After some time, his breathing slowed down.
